A Guide to Soy Wax and Paraffin Candles
The candles we burn in our daily lives do more than create a pleasant scent and atmosphere; they directly affect the air quality of our environment, our mood, and even our health. For this reason, the quality of the raw material used in a candle is extremely important.
Today, the two most common types of candles—soy wax and petroleum-based paraffin candles—differ significantly in their composition and burning properties. Soy wax, derived from soybeans, is a completely natural and renewable plant-based material. It burns cleanly and non-toxically, produces little to no soot, does not negatively impact indoor air quality, and provides a longer-lasting, balanced fragrance diffusion. In contrast, paraffin candles, which are by-products of petroleum refining, are more affordable but may release soot and harmful chemical particles during combustion—especially in enclosed or small spaces where inhalation exposure can increase.
The environmental impact of paraffin candles should also not be overlooked. Because they are produced from non-renewable fossil fuels, they contribute to a higher carbon footprint. Soy wax, on the other hand, offers a more eco-conscious alternative with its cleaner burn and sustainable sourcing. If you burn candles frequently at home, soy candles are a much safer choice for both your health and your living space.
At Yel Studios, we use only soy wax in our Soa Candle collection, crafting our products with plant-based fragrance blends and non-toxic wicks. In doing so, we aim to provide a candle experience that is not only aesthetic but also healthier and more mindful. With its natural composition, sustainable production, and clean burn, soy wax stands out as the candle type best suited to the peaceful rituals of modern living.
